You could not time Chironico better in this time frame, Cresciano would also be good. I think you can forget about Magic Wood. There is a newish digs (hostel) in Cresciano "1001 blocs". You can rent a chalet if staying for longer periods and have a group but you wouldn't be getting gite prices!
I'm heading there (Cresciano) with Mr Griffin in mid Jan. That reminds me I better sort out accom. See you at Christmas no doubt.
Should be fine in terms of weather. Fly into Milan and head north from there, let me know if you are heading.
