Glendalough's 7a Ticklist 2011

So Dave raised the question, how many 7a's are there in Glendalough - 18 as listed in the guide.

Below is the list!

BBE (Pathside) 7a
No. 6 (beside BBE) 7a
Mark's Problem (Egg Boulder) 7a+
Egg Traverse (Egg Boulder) 7a
Superstars of BMX (Pathside) 7a+
No. 31 (Behind the rails) 7a

  1. Haa!Cheers Trish!

Assuming BBE is the sit start, whats No.6? Didn't think Rythm and Stealth was a 7 but seems like loads of grades are settling with so many more ascents - Class... I've done less than half :o( I've only heard of less than half!! So much to do, keep going!

  2. 7a+ is not 7a!!! the plus is a whole grade not just some tiny increment...

  3. That's a fair point, and more along the lines of what I think, but then I've heard some climbers say 'they don't believe in + grades'... so I threw 'em in!!

  4. my point is with this logic you may as well include 6C+ as it's just as close to 7A.
anyone who says something as stupid as they dont believe in + grades obviously has no clue how the scale works, it's like saying i dont believe in odd numbered E grades.

  5. I totally agree with Chris though technically the original use of + is to grade specific new problems in relation to established benchmarks.

That said, I think most of these are sandbag 7a, so you'd better travel if you want to tick.

  6. I was just curious about the ammount of grade 7's to be honest... everything from 7a to 7c+ really. Sandbags? Whats a sandbag?

  8. I am not one who comments on posts that much but, in this case, I think that I will. In my opinion, grades in the guide, and this list, do differ substantially from what might be considered 'local knowledge', this would appear to be particularly the case for Glendalough...

For example, King Kong is certainly not 7a, I think that this problem has had two ascents (Al and myself), please note that Al grades everything in Glendo '7a', e.g. the Cherry. I would think that King Kong is at least 7b. On the subject of the egg traverse, I found this problem hard to grade as I had a long break from climbing just prior to doing it. Nonetheless, I graded it 7a+, please see the 'new problem database' on theshortspan.com... No idea why it is 7a here.. Also, if anyone has repeated it, feel free to suggest a grade. On the basis of Marks problem being 7a+, I reckon that the traverse is more likely 7b+.

The '+' does matter and this becomes increasingly the case in the higher grades - e.g. 8a and 8a+ are two very different grades..

  9. Barry. To list the Egg traverse as 7a was on oversight. Sorry about that. Feel free to suggest any grades you think are incorrect. KK has been in version of the guide.pdf 1 to 5 as 7a.

  10. Hey Dave,

No bother about the oversight, an easy mistake, particularly when putting together such an extensive guide. Also, I think the guide is great and is really useful so well done, a massive achievement. I realise the problems and conumdrums that you must have had with putting the lists of grades together, particularly as everybody has their own opinions and as you were dealing with so many problems and areas. So, as with this guide and guidebooks for other areas, and particularly for 'benchmark' grades, such as 7a, these debates will surely go on now and in the future!!

If not before, I will see ya at the meet,
    Barry
